I’ve recently begun receiving several emails per day trying to sell me on the idea of using AI technology to relieve me of work that I do for my clients. I admit that I wouldn’t mind help getting certain things done, but in general I’m not so sure it would be a good idea.
In my experience there are two different kinds of tasks that we all need help with. First, it’s great to have help getting all the little (and big) routine, repetitious things done that most of us find tedious. Computers have been very good at that for a long time now, and indeed keep getting better at it, especially with a little help from humans who can teach them how to structure rather complicated processes and consistently implement known solutions.
The human-computer partnership works well for such things because computers explicitly make up for human weaknesses: they calculate faster, never get tired or hungry, and don’t need to take bio-breaks. Computers don’t deviate from their instructions because they get bored. They don’t talk back – though at times they can be grindingly resistant to the simplest of human intentions. In general, however, they are a godsend.
The other kind of tasks that we’re all called upon to perform are those requiring human judgment. The recent explosion of ChatGPT and other large language models onto the wider stage of human endeavor seems to have convinced many that AI models are now ready to be given many of those tasks as well. And while we can now interact with computers in more ‘human’ ways, I still think the jury is out on that one.
Why? Take, for example, the following straightforward interaction between ChatGPT and a human conversant.[i]

This strikes me as an excellent example of why, in some cases, “more human” can be a distinct liability. Rather than make up for human shortcomings, the AI appears to embody many of the kinds of behaviors that too often lead to humans making bad decisions.
Because it is an amalgam of millions of interactions but doesn’t actually possess its own distinct experience or point of view, the AI above easily surrenders to a simple contra-assertion, an intellectual bully. When faced with pushback, it doesn’t check facts or consider alternatives or mount an intellectual examination before deciding whether to stand its ground. It simply defers to its human conversant. We know, of course, that humans do this all the time; but that trait doesn’t typically make us better decision makers.
On the other hand, the AI is clearly built to follow the path of least intellectual resistance. It calculates a response that is statistically most likely to prevail within its sphere of training. As a result, we can expect it to be remarkably politically correct, or perhaps to simply ignore viewpoints not currently widely held by its target population. It appears, therefore, that the AI excels in pablum but is unlikely to reflect a distinct perspective or original insight.
Would such an approach result in better outcomes – financial and otherwise – for our clients? I doubt it, on many levels. But most clearly, I doubt that it would make for better investment decisions. Computers do indeed help us make better investment decisions, but precisely because they steadfastly do what they should when real human beings are led by their emotions – and by the sway of other humans – to do exactly the wrong things at the wrong time. It is, in fact, most individuals’ “humanness” that trips them up when it comes to investing.
That said, Warren Buffett once quipped that every major investing trend consists of three phases, or waves. He said: “First come the innovators, then come the imitators, then come the idiots.” Innovators, who recognize a good idea and have the courage to act on it before it goes mainstream, are mavericks. They break away from “accepted wisdom.” They are also the ones who can make a lot of money (or lose it). Imitators, if they are fast enough and careful, can also get in on the party, but don’t do as well as the pioneers. But by the time “everybody knows” that there is money to be made by doing something, the party is typically already over. The third wave, relying solely on what has gone before but without the foresight to see the risks or envision what is likely to change, typically loses money, and many times a lot of it.
It is precisely because AIs still must rely on humans to interact directly with and have a unique perspective on the world that I’m skeptical about entrusting them with too much, too soon. They have not learned from real mistakes that they regretted, nor have they have been able to leverage tough lessons from their peers and mentors. They may synthesize common responses from the recent past quite well, but how likely are they to recognize a unique situation or anticipate how a particular person may respond to it? One has to ask: is AI currently suited to be an innovator, or is it more likely to play the role of idiot?
For now, at least, I’m taking a wait-and-see approach.
